| Resumo | The effects of the positioning of red (R)and near-infrared (NIR)bands on the AVIRIS-derived NDVI measurements of Brazilian savannas were investigated. In order to spectrally characterize the reflectance variations in the AVIRIS scene and their influences on the NDVI calculations, principal components analysis (PCA)was applied to a set of 64 AVIRIS bands positioned at the spectral interval of 500-1100 nm. The most representative AVIRIS reflectance spectra of the second and third components, which were related to the variations in the red wavelength and in the near-infrared plateau of the vegetation spectra, provided the basis for the simulation of the R and NIR bands of some broad-band sensors. The results showed that the effects of the band positioning on the NDVI measurement decreased from the green to the nonphotosynthetic vegetation or, by inference, from the rainy to the dry season. However, the use of sensors with the NIR bands positioned at longer wavelengths, or with the R and NIR bands that surpass the red edge domain (690-750 nm), such as MSS and AVHRR, reduces the spectral contrast between the vegetation types. In comparison with the other sensors, from a band positioning perspective, they are less adequate for the inter-annual monitoring of the vegetation in areas of strong rainfall seasonal contrast such as in the case of the Brazilian savannas. |
